One Plan

What is a Place-based approach to school improvement?

A Place-based approach to school improvement coheres a plan which identifies the capacity and expertise required to address the needs of schools within in a defined geographical area.

Plymouth is one of four national pilots to undertake this approach to school improvement work and the city’s leaders of education have agreed that the purpose of Place-based Working in the city is to bring system leaders together to collaborate on the issues that can only be overcome through joint working.

Place-based working in Plymouth began in 2018 when the city’s nineteen secondary schools agreed to work together to improve outcomes at KS4.  Since this time, Place-based working has evolved from having an exclusive secondary focus to a multi-phase approach.
